Critical Illness Insurance

What is Critical Illness Insurance?

Critical illness insurance is designed to provide financial support for individuals who have experienced a critical illness by providing them with a lump sum amount of money after diagnosis. Critical illnesses, such as heart attacks and strokes, can quickly outstrip an individual’s or family’s insurance plan, while some insurance plans won’t even cover the treatment or medicine for critical illnesses, to begin with.

A critical illness insurance plan covers many expenses and treatments that traditional insurance won’t cover while also providing the insured with the money needed to cover general expenses while recovering after treatment. While an individual is recovering after a stroke, critical illness insurance might cover daily living expenses so that the individual can recover at home without having to immediately return to work. Critical illness insurance may cover transportation costs to and from appointments, or even retrofit vehicles to carry scooters or wheelchairs if needed.

How Critical Illness Insurance works

Like traditional insurance plans, critical illness insurance is paid each month with the price depending on the policy and what it covers. For example, a plan that only covers cancer and it’s related expenses may cost less per month than a policy that covers cancer expenses as well as expenses for strokes and heart attacks. Each individual has the flexibility to choose which critical illnesses they want to be covered in their critical illness insurance plan according to the price they are able to pay per month and their medical condition.

Also like traditional insurance plans, critical illness insurance states specifically how and when the insurance company will offer payments to the insured. For some illnesses, the insurance company may only pay if the illness is past a specified critical status.

It’s important to work with a trusted insurance broker to understand what the policy covers and when the insurance will pay, and determine which type of critical illness insurance policy is best for you.
